Whilst starting great, it goes without saying that the second half of 2016 will go down as a period Samsung will want to forget and it’s just getting worse for the companies new Galaxy Note 7. After releasing the device to a wave of mass welcome, it all went wrong very quickly, to suddenly being faced with battery explosions amid a global re-call, going as far to assure Customers in their software they’re on a safe device. However, whilst you’d like to think it would be all over, it would seem even that hasn’t stopped the Galaxy Note 7 heat issues entirely.
During the re-call process, many Airlines, as well as other institutions, had a straight up ban on Galaxy Note 7 devices, though were assured, as we all were, that the faulty batteries were replaced with a new supply which would be safe, however;
Replacement Galaxy Note 7 catches fire on Southwest plane before takeoff
A Southwest Airlines airplane was evacuated before takeoff at the Louisville Metro Airport after a replacement copy of the Galaxy Note 7 started smoking and burned through the carpet. All passengers exited safely and the flight was cancelled.
The owner of the said unit, Brian Green, confirmed to The Verge that the device was a replacement unit with the image shown above, which he’d picked up from US Carrier AT&T at their local store on September 21st. The picture also shows the filled in black square, which Samsung themselves use to differentiate between the “safe” devices and the original released models. Brian Green had also confirmed that the device featured the green battery icon, which Samsung added to confirm it was the newer, supposedly, safe model.
The device apparently was shut down, however whilst still in Brian Green’s pocket began to emit smoke. Naturally, the device was quickly dropped to the floor where the device began to show “thick grey-green angry smoke”, the device then continue to smoke and then burn causing damage to the plane’s subfloor, burning through the carpet.
The device in question is currently in the hands of Louisville Fire Department, who will be working with Samsung as part of an investigation to find out what has caused this problem yet again.
In terms of the customer himself, Brian Green confirmed he’d now replaced his Galaxy Note 7 with an iPhone 7.
Statement from Samsung;
Samsung haven’t made a full statement, we expect that to follow shortly, though they did inform TechnoBuffalo they are now investigating the issue and will share further information when it’s naturally available to share;
“Until we are able to retrieve the device, we cannot confirm that this incident involves the new Note 7. We are working with the authorities and Southwest now to recover the device and confirm the cause. Once we have examined the device we will have more information to share.”
However this is yet another blow on Samsung with the Galaxy Note 7, a device which honestly is a fantastic Smartphone which keeps getting these let downs. We will say, whilst we did give the device top marks on our recent Top 5 Smartphones of Q3 2016, we would advice (and have updated that post), in the meantime to hold off your purchase of the Galaxy Note 7 until this issue is resolved, as it unfortunately is clear the case is not closed on the matter.
