At Google I/O, Google spoke about two applications heading out to Android and iOS, a video calling app Duo (which has being out for a while), and this, Allo.
Yes, Allo is yet another instant messaging client you can now choose from, which is getting a bit pathetic now, especially as there’s not that many things Allo has to differentiate itself. You can send messages, pictures, stickers, use it as an SMS client on Android … all things other apps can do, theres very little things about Allo to sell it to us.
To make matters worse, Allo ISN’T replacing Hangouts, that’s going to remain too, so even Google themselves already have a bloated IM base, with Hangouts, Google Voice, Allo … this list is getting crazy now.
To make matters worse, Allo is the first major IM client to come BY DEFAULT non-encrypted, meaning all your Messages including history and content are stored on Google’s servers, which in a world of hacking and already concerns over governments watching us, we find this more than disconcerting. Naturally, like Chrome, theres an Incognito mode, which other than a darker look, does add encryption but limits other features of the application.
The big push Google are making with Allo is the Google Assistant. Similar to Cortana on Microsoft’s Business Clients, you can essentially chat to your Assistant and it will reply with suggestions for this such as ‘best restaurant nearby’, scores at Sports and more, things which you can already do through Google Now, or Siri on iOS, so again we don’t see the plus in this.
Plus, to add to that, we don’t see many people wanting to chat essentially with their phone like this.
Allo is nothing special, of course you can give it a shot below from either the Apple App Store or Google Play, and let us know below if you disagree with our thoughts on Allo. It’s also worth noting that it’s still after all this time, still a preview, so expect bugs.
Rollout is still ongoing, so expect some Stores to still be updating.
