Yes, you read right, Samsung have launched a beta program which will allow iOS users to test an in beta application allowing iPhone 5 or later to connect and use Samsung’s range of Gear S2 devices.
Limited to South Korea …for now
The beta program, which you can find here, which unfortunately only in South Korea for now, will run from August 24th, to Monday September 19th, leading us to expect that we should see a release for the Software around that point.
Should you be in South Korea, have either a Gear S2, Gear S2 Classic or Gear Fit 2, and own an iPhone 5 or later running iOS 8.2 or later (we know it’s a stretch), you can sign up for the beta program.
App features and possible limitations from Android app
Similar to the way Google put Android Wear on to the iPhone, the Gear S2 companion app for iPhone too cements the iPhone as having the most possibilities for Smart Watch wearers, but also bears the question as to whether Samsung will limit the experience as Google had to, but Samsung have confirmed a few things the experience will have on Android.
- Access to the full Gear Store, allowing installation of apps and watch faces to the Gear S2
- Access to iOS notifications, though naturally interaction with notifications will be limited
- Samsung are expected to update some of their own existing iOS apps to likely interact with the Gear S2 delivering better functionality than the limited one expected in comparison naturally to the Apple Watch
