It’s been a while since I did a personal technology blog, and a lot has changed since then, I’ve been a long time supporter of Apple gear, loved my iPhone 4, my MacBook Air and iMac are still going strong, but look at me now, own a Nokia Lumia 920 and ready to replace my Air for a Microsoft Surface Pro.
I love Windows 8, as I do for Windows Phone, the live tiles are just incredible and really are so useful. Whilst both platforms do have a slight learning curve, once you grasp it, it’s really hard to not just completely fall in love with the platform and I guess I’m no different.
Windows 8 is obviously the next version of Microsoft Windows following Windows 7, but with a massive change, the entire main UI has completely changed to which I shout at the top of my voice, hallelujah!!! I hate the Aero interface, hated it in Vista and hated it in 7, and now in Windows 8 you can be rid of it … well at least in an understanding manor. The only time you should see Aero on Windows 8 is when you are running previous gen (if you will) program’s available for Windows XP/Vista/7 as-is, as Windows 8 is the first version of Windows that can run (more or less on the 95% case) everything compatible with Windows 7 in the familiar Windows 7 UI, but use the beautiful Modern UI for the new apps.
But the biggest thing I love about Windows 8, is honestly the thing that brought me to the Apple franchise of gear as it will, it’s interesting, it’s new, it’s different and exciting, Mac OS X hasn’t been either of them things for the longest time, Apple need a major UI redesign across the board, whether OS X or iOS, but Windows 8 has things today that will take Apple a very long while to match. Microsoft made Windows 8 irresistible with the Surface, ignoring the RT, Surface Pro is a tablet like the iPad, but has the ability to run tablet apps but also be a fully fletched desktop OS with all the program’s you need there too, and as soon as its available we’ll be there praising or going oh dear right here!
This is far from the first time I’ve been on Windows Phone, I broke my Windows Phone virginity back at the launch of the Nokia Lumia 800. The phone was teaming with bugs on launch and after 5-6 months had to get rid of it and return to the iPhone 4 I had before thinking the platform will be ready soon.
I fell in the trap of curiosity again and checked out the lower cost Lumia 710, like the Lumia 800 is today, the phone now has no bugs in the OS when you can then focus on simply enjoying the phone, and now I’m on the all new Nokia Lumia 920 after testing the Windows Phone 8X by HTC for The Tech Show.
Windows Phone 8 is a great OS, it does the job of a modern Smartphone OS and it does it really well, the Live Tile sizes might not sound like much of a visual change from the previous version, but trust me, it’s a big leap in how you can now use the phone to make it personal.
But one thing I have been constantly really annoyed about every time I’ve returned or looked at Windows Phone is nothing seems to have changed, are updates going out for this platform regular enough? The app collection, what’s going on there? Since using the Lumia 800, and now the 920, I may have noticed about 5 new major apps in Xbox Games, and the same for general apps, nothing seems to be going on. Momentum of the platform brought them to 100,000 apps in the quickest time of any mobile OS, but were only at 120,000 apps in nearly that equal time, what happened? Windows Phone apps are also third rate, when apps are released they generally get released on iOS first, Android maybe the week after, but Windows Phone if in a year, it’s ridiculous! I’m not someone obsessed with apps and games on my phone, I like a phone to pass the hours, but variety is key, look at the Windows Phone Store now then tomorrow, you’ll probably see the same featured content, the same content … now do that on Google Play or the App Store, exactly.
Platform Change?
I’ve used iOS for years, started with the iPhone 3G, last iPhone was the iPhone 4 and everything’s been actually rather pleasant, the platform has begun to get a tad stale and not much has changed for the longest time, hopefully no Scott Forstall will be a good thing for the iOS UI, as the platform actually has everything else going for it, it has the apps, so so incredible apps, and it has the games, it has it all, it just falls back on UI and get that fixed in iOS7, more likely 8, then you’ve a platform OS once again that people would be crazy to ignore, and it really should be that way again, especially based on the money available at the company!
Even now I’d still consider the next iPhone, the platform still has everything I need a platform to have, but UI reform is really needed at Apple.
My experiences on Android have been …. interesting, we’ll leave it at that. Yeah things have been far from smooth on Android in a literal and non literal manor, the platform has come a very long way, tried out the Google Nexus 4 recently and honestly it was the first Android phone that gave me a similar enjoyment and ease of use I’d seen on iOS in the past, Google finally know what it means to refine software to make it smooth and more pleasant to use, now if they work on platform and app security that will be a platform I’d look at again, but my God, get a Nexus if you’re going on Android.
As for me, Android will always have bad memories, but with Android you’ve to try and forget you’re previous experience and start a fresh, right now the Nexus 4 lacks in too many things, LTE, higher storage, two things I really look for in a phone now, but Android I think with maybe 5.0 will be ready!
Blackberrys are terrible phones, they’re quite frankly embarrassing smartphones, in fact anyone that calls them a smartphone I give a very judge worthy eye, but with Blackberry 10, RIM appear to have an actual brain and want to save the company. The main problem with Blackberry 10 lies in RIM itself, look what happened to the Playbook! The Playbook was a brilliant tablet, QNX was a fantastic OS core to use, the Playbook genuinely was a very good tablet, but got drowned out and forgotten, this could easily happen to BB10 and RIM can’t afford that to happen!
As far as I’m concerned BB10 is not ready, if they get to 11 it maybe, but now it’s not. BB10 from an outside perspective looks like a bad version of Android with UI copied from every platform, it’s appears to run IE from Windows Phone, app layout of iOS with some tweaks like Android, it’s great to look at other platforms for inspiration, but implement them uniquely you might have something to grab people with.
Overview
This year could be different from the next, by the time the next iPhone comes out, Windows Phone could have actually got major developers finally, Android could be more irresistible than ever, who knows. But for now, that’s my impression of the world of desktop and smartphone OS’ …. Chrome OS and Linux? Don’t make me laugh

open the links. You might add a related video or a related picture or two to grab readers excited about what you’ve written. In my opinion, it would make your blog a little bit more interesting.
It is too early in the planning process to say exactly what type of technology will be installed at future roadside traveler facilities, but the study will recommend that
“state-of-the-art” technology be used in the improved facilities.
At the end of the day this is an expensive problem to rectify.
Even if they don’t venture into the waves, they can pick up bacteria from the sand.
